Water Analyses

Analyses of water will indicate its suitability for use in irrigation and/or for human/animal consumption. Samples for GlobalGap and human/animal consumption, must be taken a-septically and delivered to the lab within a very short time.

General Guidelines For Sampling Of Water For Analyses:

Both the sample container and the lid must be clean .A 500 ml plastic soft drink bottle with screw top is mostly acceptable. If samples are not dispatched via courier, a 750 ml glass bottle is preferred. Rinse the container 3 times with the source before taking the sample. In instances where the sample needs to be analyzed for micro-organisms, rinse the container and lid 3 times with hot water at minimum 70 degrees Celsius. Now rinse the container 3 times with the source to be sampled. Fill the container to the brim.

It is imperative that a decent, representative sample be taken and the following guidelines are to be followed;

  • Bore holes;- stagnant water in the system should be removed first/pumped out ,to ensure that a fresh sample from the hole is taken .
  • Dams;- take the sample as closely to the centre as possible-at least 2 m from the edge of the dam. Sample at 25 cm to 50 cm depth.

Label sample containers clearly by using a permanent marker or by putting the label in a plastic bag and securing it onto the bottle with an elastic band.Store the sample at room temperature, but dispatch to the laboratory as soon as possible. If micro-organisms are to be tested for, cool the sample to 4 degrees Celsius and submit to the laboratory within 24 hours. Special containers are available from the laboratory for water samples to be tested for heavy metals.

You are welcome to use the attached sample submission form. (sample attached)

Note :

Samples for human consumption, micro organisms and Global Gap must be taken a-septically.

For GlobalGap purposes, NviroTek Labs analyze waters with reference to the SANS 241:2006
South African National Standard for drinking water, as prescribed by the GlobalGap inspection consultants of SGS. This includes some of the heavy metals.
